Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Auto and Identity Theft Cases

Feb 26, 2015 - 9:45am

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) received a tip regarding a stolen vehicle.  The vehicle in question was located in the parking lot of the Village Inn on Garden of the Gods Road.  Upon closer inspection of the vehicle it was discovered that it displayed a cloned Colorado license plate.  The suspect found a 2014 black Dodge Challenger, copied down the license plate number, filed down a plate and used stencils to create a fictitious plate.  The suspect then found a grey 2014 Dodge Challenger and put the fictitious plates on that vehicle after he had stolen it.  A check of the Vehicle Identification Number confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Englewood, Colorado from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Upon discovering this, surveillance was set up and when the suspect approached the vehicle he stole, members of CRU made contact with him.  He was taken into custody without incident and provided a fictitious name and date of birth, which was supported by a Colorado Drivers License with his photo and matching information.  This information was later found to be fraudulent.  After learning his true identity it was discovered he had four outstanding felony warrants.

Subsequent to the arrest CRU conducted a search of the vehicle and found evidence the suspect was involved in a number of identity theft cases in Quail Lake Loop Area of Colorado Springs and Englewood, Colorado.  In addition to the evidence found for making the fictitious plates, a postal worker uniform to include pants, shirt and hat were present in the vehicle.  After a search of the suspects hotel room a computer, printer and materials related to the creation of fraudulent identification and checks were found.  Information was obtained that lead CRU to believe the suspect was dressing as a postal employee so he may steal mail and eventually identities.  Sheriff's Office CRU is working in conjunction with the US Postal Service, the Colorado Springs Police Department and law enforcement authorities in the Denver area for follow-up on the crimes committed and the possibility of additional victims.

Jesse D. Williams was booked into the Criminal Justice Center on February 25, 2015, on the following charges: Unlawful Possession with Intent, Distribution (Felony 3), two counts of Identity Theft (Felony 4), First Degree Criminal Trespass (Felony 6).  He is being held without bond.
