Sheriff's Office Arrests High School Band Coach for Sexual Exploitation of a Child
In early February of 2014, an El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) School Resource Officer received a report of a possible inappropriate relationship between a student and a contract employee at Air Academy High School in School District 20. The case was referred to detectives with the EPSO Investigations Division, who continued the investigation into the allegations. Ultimately, they learned the following:
Through interviews and forensic examination of various types of digital media, it was discovered that David Hurd, a 38 year old male who, at the time, was employed as a contract band choreographer/coach by the school had been engaging in an inappropriate romantic relationship with a 16 year old student.
On April 11, 2014, EPSO Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Hurd, who lives in the Denver area. In coordination with the Aurora Police Department, they were able to locate and arrest Mr. Hurd on that same date. He was subsequently booked into the Aurora City Jail on a $50,000 bond and a search warrant was executed at his residence. He is currently charged with the following offenses:
18-6-403 (1)(1.5)(j) Sexual Exploitation of a Child, A class 3 Felony, 2 counts
18-6-403(5)(b) Sexual Exploitation of a Child, A class 6 Felony, 2 counts
18-7-102 (2.5)(a) Obscenity, a Class 6 Felony, 3 counts.
Due to the nature of the charges and the age of the victim, no additional information will be released.
Mr. Hurd is involved in multiple marching band activities throughout the country as a consultant and choreographer and has been for many years.
